Dan's Bio My high school swimming career involved mostly local and regional competition, highlighted by several top 8 finishes in the Delaware High School State Meet and other regional top 16 finishes. I was also a 4 year varsity member of the cross country team, helping to win a state championship in 1984 and earning all conference honors my junior and senior year. I had my first experience in open water swimming in the latter years of HS as well, enjoying success in open water racing and biathlon competitions. As a collegiate swimmer I represented two national championship teams with Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, FL. I swam on a full scholarship and was an NJCAA national qualifier and team captain in 1986. I went on to swim briefly while at Florida State University and then finished my college career at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in Glassboro, New Jersey. A few years after college, and nearly 10 years into my age group coaching career, I worked and competed in beach patrol and surf rescue. As an extension of that work, I directed the Rehoboth Beach Revival Mile open water race for 6 years spanning that time. As a coach, I’ve worked at virtually every level, from summer league to age group swimming, in YMCA programs, with collegiate swimmers and masters. I’ve overseen the development of all ranges of ability, from novices to Olympic Trial qualifiers. I’ve administered successful programs ranging from beginner swim lessons to age group swim teams. Perhaps most valuable is that over the last 25 years I’ve had the good fortune to collaborate with some of most respected coaches in the Middle Atlantic and Potomac Valley regions. My expertise as a teacher and coach are the result of these broad experiences and form the foundation of our mission with Flying Gull Aquatic Club. Other professional pursuits of mine include design and architecture. I studied in the architecture department at Anne Arundel Community College and worked as an intern architect at a commercial firm in Annapolis from 2002-2006. My hobbies also include mountain biking, skiing, golfing, hiking, reading and brewing beer. In 1991 I completed a 4,500 mile west coast/cross continental bicycle tour of the US with a friend. In 1995, I reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a trip through East Africa and Paris. I currently live in Annapolis with my wife Katie and cat Kiwi. < back ![]() |
